About

The London Road Station Partnership is a group of neighbours living near the lovely nineteenth-century London Road station, just outside the centre of Brighton. In April 2011, we set up a station community  partnership with Southern Railway. We’re still going … happily meeting up and creating small green spaces for people in the neighbourhood to enjoy.

Shady 8.14 close upWe’ve created two small gardens on either side of the station building. One is for shade-tolerant ornamental plants  while in the other, we grow fruit and vegetables in raised beds, including a mini-orchard of local apple trees and a pear.

We also plant up planters on the platform with ornamental plants and fill the tree pits in the front of the station with flowers.

Our latest project involves creating a small pocket park in the shade of sycamore trees on the south side of the station. There we’re encouraging wildflowers which grow in chalk and shade, including ‘urban’ varieties. We hope our little park will showcase the beauty of common flowering weeds!

We get together regularly to work on the gardens, usually on a TUESDAY between 2pm and 4pm. We meet up at the edible plot by the railway bridge on the south side of the station.

We welcome everybody – drop by to see what we’re growing, come and garden with us, or spend a quiet moment in our pocket park. We’d love to see you.

  1. London Road Station is a real insider nook of Brighton, and one of my favourite parts of the city. I was delighted to see the planting next to the station, and to learn about the London Road Station Partnership. It’s a great model for stations across the country, especially those in cities, as it provides a welcome fruit and vegetable oasis. Keep up the great work!

    • Thanks, Charlotte. It really makes a difference to us that people enjoy the gardens and drop by to talk to us. And London Road Station is such a lovely building, making Shaftesbury Place a real focus for the local community.
